Fitness Equipment Maintenance and Service

Being in the service department and repairing every facet of fitness equipment I have found it extremely important to maintain equipment on a regular basis. There are a few simple things that can be done to extend the life of bikes, treadmills and ellipticals and make them more enjoyable to work out on. The most important, and daily exercise that should be done is wiping your piece of equipment down. A damp cloth will do very well getting rid of sweat, carpet fibers, pet hair and foreign objects…all generally known as dust bunnies. Treadmills generally attract more dust and fibers due to the way the machine operates and will need more cleaning than a general wipe down. Regular vacuuming inside the motor cover will greatly increase the reliability of the electronics, elevation actuator and drive motor. Please take precautions before attempting to do this and refer to the owners manual. Treadmills also require deck lubrication on regular intervals. This is to ensure that the motor and electronics work efficiently and effectively during peak operation, failing to do so will result in premature wear on the deck and running belt which in turn will cause an overload on the electronic board potentially causing a catastrophic failure. Be sure to use the correct lubrication. Refer to the owner’s manual for the correct lubrication as this does vary. A good suggestion is for a qualified service technician to complete a planned maintenance check on your fitness equipment. Something I have found that limits dust and dirt getting on treadmills and ellipticals is simply using running shoes that are dedicated for indoor use only, a very simple solution that could prevent a service call. Other tips would be using a mat under the exercise equipment which keeps dust bunnies to a minimum, eliminating an uneven surface and also protecting the carpet, tile or hardwood floor and preventing static build up within the machine. Keep the machine in room temperature and indoors, components stiffen and dry in colder temperatures causing increased noise and wear on certain items. Most of all, if you use it, it will wear out, which shows you are exercising and staying healthy. I look forward to completing maintenance on your equipment in the future.  Enjoy.
